Meet the stars of our production of Suor Angelica! Starring as the titular character is local soprano Karen Kanakis and as her aunt, La Zia Principessa, Nora Teipen. Read on to learn more about both of these leading ladies, and join us on March 19th, 20th, or 21st as they perform in Suor Angelica.
Soprano Karen Kanakis is hailed for her fine vocal technique and dramatic flair. Her powerful voice conveys rich emotion, displays brilliant agility, and soars to a thrilling high extension. Critics have called her singing “splendid,” and “engaging,” and said she “lights up the stage… timing and expressions were priceless,” and “her voice and stage presence are a delight.”
Ms. Kanakis is thrilled to be singing the role of Suor Angelica with Winter Opera St. Louis after making her role debut as Minnie in La Fanciulla del West with them in 2020. In 2018-19 she performed Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus– also with Winter Opera St. Louis, the Verdi Requiem with the Missouri Symphony, and Anna in Nabucco with Union Avenue Opera. Other operatic highlights include Giorgetta in Il Tabarro, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Violetta in La Traviata.
Mezzo-soprano Nora Teipen returns to Winter Opera St. Louis for the role of Principessa in Suor Angelica.
Ms. Teipen made her debut with New Opera St. Louis in its first season production of Rigoletto, as Maddalena. Subsequently she performed the role of Delilah in Samson and Delilah, Charlotte in Werther, and as the old woman in The Wise Women. Following her performance as Delilah, Ms. Teipen performed the role of Carmen for Opera Seabrook in New Jersey.
Her concert and oratorio engagements include solo performances with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, including Prayers of Kierkegaard, El Amor Brujo, Duruflé’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Ms. Teipen owns and operates Teipen Performing Arts.
